REGIONAL PLANETARY IMAGE FACILITY

While working for the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, in D.C., some of my duties supported their onsite Regional Planetary Image Facility (RPIF). Funded by NASA, the RPIF was a planetary image and data library, containing over 800,000 images of our solar system’s planets and moons. Binders upon binders of some of the most beautiful images would fill very long shelves. Working there was like being a kid in a candy shop. There were so many wonderful things to explore.

I performed the following, in support of the RPIF:

  • Organized, cataloged, and rebound the RPIF’s holdings .
  • Created and maintained the RPIF’s  Resources for Earth and Planetary Research Guide.
  • Updated the imagery on the RPIF webpages.
  • Created a Solar System Montage image for use by the RPIF.

The RPIF at CEPS, was once part of a network of RPIFs that NASA had placed at research centers and institutions around the world. Over many years, the older hard copy contents within the collections were digitized and put online. By 2020, NASA stop funding the brick-and-mortar facilities. The RPIF at CEPS was renamed the Smithsonian Planetary Image Facility and continues to operate as it always has, providing researchers with access to their planetary image data.
